Retrieve → Re-evaluate → Replenish → Document → Celebrate Agìkūyū history, heritage, culture and Gìkūyū language.
Agìkūyū Women and Men is a cultural heritage initiative founded in 2017 and formally registered in 2018 with a shared vision: to safeguard the wisdom, traditions, history, language and identity of the Agìkūyū people.
We work to ensure that the knowledge carried by generations is not lost as societies change. Our focus includes the Gìkūyū language, oral literature, songs, traditions, indigenous knowledge, history, cultural practices and community memory.
Our work recognizes that heritage is not simply something from the past. It is a living source of identity, knowledge and belonging that continues to shape how communities understand themselves and their place in the world.
We exist because much of our culture, history, and Agìkūyū heritage—our language, songs, oral literature, traditional knowledge, and community practices—is at risk of being forgotten in the face of modernization and globalization.
Our mission is to Retrieve, Re-evaluate, Replenish, Document, and to Celebrate Agìkūyū culture, history, and Gìkūyū language so that current and future generations can understand, honor, and carry forward their heritage with pride.
Our culture is the heartbeat of who we are as a people. Yet, many of our traditions and historical truths are disappearing as elders pass on and younger generations grow up disconnected from their roots. Preserving the Agìkūyū heritage is not just about remembering the past—it is about protecting identity, reclaiming pride, and ensuring that our stories, wisdom, and language continue to inspire generations to come. If we do not act now, we risk losing invaluable knowledge, practices, and perspectives that have shaped our community for centuries. This initiative ensures that our children and grandchildren will inherit not only our names but also the rich heritage that defines us.
